England should target Guardiola or Klopp to succeed Southgate, says Eriksson

England should attempt to convince either Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp to succeed Gareth Southgate, says former Three Lions boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Southgate announced his resignation this week in the wake of England s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, their second final loss in as many European Championship campaigns under him.

The likes of Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Lee Carsley have been touted as potential successors if the Football Association (FA) wishes to appoint another English boss.

However, reports have also suggested the FA are keen to speak with Guardiola about the vacancy, with many believing he may leave Manchester City next year.

Former Liverpool boss Klopp, meanwhile, is thought likely to take a sabbatical after eight years…

Thomas Tuchel ´devastated´ by Chelsea dismissal

Thomas Tuchel was left devastated by his Chelsea dismissal, as he thanked the club s players and fans for their support in a heartfelt social media post on Sunday.

Chelsea sacked Tuchel in the aftermath of a 1-0 Champions League defeat at Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday, announcing Brighton and Hove Albion s Graham Potter as his successor the following day.

Tuchel led Chelsea to Champions League glory just four months after his January 2021 appointment. He then added the Super Cup and Club World Cup trophies last season, as well as overseeing penalty shoot-out defeats to Liverpool in both of the EFL and FA Cup last season

Despite outspending every other Premier League club in the recent transfer window, however, Chelsea took just 10 points from their opening six games…

Messi will be surrounded by young talent – Rousaud confident he can persuade forward to stay at Barc

Lionel Messi s wages are not sustainable but the superstar forward can be persuaded to stay at Barcelona with a sporting project that appeals to him, according to presidential candidate Emili Rousaud.

The six-time Ballon d Or winner was unsuccessful in his attempt to leave Camp Nou ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, but he is now free to discuss an end-of-season transfer with clubs after entering the final six months of his contract.

He was strongly tipped to reunite with former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while Inter and Paris Saint-Germain – now coached by fellow Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino – have also been linked.

But while reiterating Messi will have to take a pay cut if he is to stay on at Barca beyond this season, Rousaud has outlined his …

Premier League has opened ´Pandora´s box´ with Everton points deduction

The Premier League has opened Pandora s box after Everton were deducted 10 points for breaching financial regulations.

That is the view of John Blain, the vice-chairman of the Everton Shareholders Association and of Toffee TV.

Everton were hit with the largest points deduction in Premier League history on Friday, after being found guilty by an independent commission of breaching the competition s Profit and Sustainability rules.

The commission found that Everton had lost £124.5million over a three-year period, which is £19.5m over the £105m threshold.

Everton s punishment comes amid the backdrop of Manchester City facing 115 charges, while Chelsea are under investigation after reports detailed a series of payments, worth tens of millions, were made dur…

Milner wants to stay at Liverpool

According to a recent report from Liverpool Echo, Liverpool midfielder James Milner wants to stay at the club beyond the end of the current season. The belief was that the Englishman would move on to pastures new, but it doesn’t actually appear to be the case.

Milner has surprised an awful lot of people during his tenure at Anfield, establishing himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in English football. While he may not have much longer at the top of the game in comparison to some of his peers, Liverpool will want to get as much out of him as they possibly can.

The Reds have an incredibly stacked squad with some great strength in depth, but even with that being the case, Milner will almost certainly be a handy option for a few years to come.

Milner…

A final winner again! 2,576 days and the wait is over for Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp is a major trophy winner again after 2,576 days.

Klopp s Liverpool proved too strong for Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid, an early penalty from Mohamed Salah setting them on their way before substitute Divock Origi settled it with three minutes to go.

It ends a miserable run for Klopp, who had lost his previous six major finals spanning his spell on Merseyside and at previous club Borussia Dortmund.

2576 Jürgen has won his first major trophy after 2576 days and 6 lost finals. Relief.

´It had never happened to me´ – Inzaghi bemused by penalty call in Bayern defeat

Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi was surprised by the referee s decision to decline their first-half penalty shout for a Sadio Mane handball in Tuesday s 2-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich.

The Nerazzurri were denied a penalty in the 10th minute despite referee Ivan Kruzliak consulting VAR when Mane appeared to raise his arms to block Nicolo Barella s goal-bound shot.

Despite Inter s early pressure, Bayern took the lead from Benjamin Pavard s 32nd-minute header, before Eric Maxim Choupo-Mating settled the points with a long-range 72nd-minute strike.

The match had no consequence on placings in Group C, with both sides already locked in for the last-16, but Inzaghi was still surprised by the referee s call on the Mane handball.

The penalty? It had n…

Remontada redux? Barca aiming for greatest Champions League comeback in Paris

Barcelona s Champions League campaign feels all but over as they head to Paris Saint-Germain nursing a 4-1 last-16 deficit.

Kylian Mbappe made merry at Camp Nou last month, netting a brilliant hat-trick after Lionel Messi gave the hosts a first-half lead.

The fact the defeat came on their own patch makes Barca s hopes even more remote, but they ve been on both sides of incredible recent Champions League comebacks – most famously in this very fixture.

Here, we look at some of the nights in Europe s top competition where logic left town.

2019: Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (4-3 on aggregate)

Jurgen Klopp s Liverpool had been well beaten at Camp Nou, with the 3-0 scoreline flattering Barcelona but making the Catalans clear favourites to complete their s…

Marotta to stand down as Juventus CEO

Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed he will leave his position as CEO of Juventus in October.

The 61-year-old stepped into the role in 2010 and has overseen a glorious period for the club, which has included seven consecutive Serie A titles.

Marotta has been heavily linked with the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) but denied that was the motive for his departure from Turin in a television interview after the Bianconeri s 3-1 win over Napoli on Saturday.

He said in a statement published by Juve: The club is carrying out an extensive renewal. My mandate as chief executive comes to an end on October 25 and the list of board members, which will be presented on Monday, will not contain my name.

For the time being I will remain in place as chie…

Bale says ´golfer´ claim from Courtois was a joke, not a jibe

Gareth Bale has cleared the air with Thibaut Courtois after the goalkeeper let slip that Real Madrid team-mates nicknamed the Welsh star the golfer .

That revelation emerged earlier this year when Courtois, in an interview with a Belgian newspaper, also hinted at bemusement over Bale and Toni Kroos skipping a team evening meal because they wanted to avoid a late night.

Bale, who says his critics are misinformed and their verdicts on his Santiago Bernabeu career mean nothing , made sure he got to the bottom of Courtois comments.

And he believes the Belgian goalkeeper meant no offence.

I am a golfer! Bale said in a Wales news conference on Thursday. I spoke to him about it and he meant it as a joke.

People took it out of context, but I m very happ…
